James Colyer Signs with Washington Nationals
Pitcher James Colyer signs a free agent minor league contract with the Washington Nationals
OAKLAND, Calif. - January 30, 2026
Pitcher James Colyer signs a free agent minor league contract with the Washington Nationals, making him the first member of the Ballers 2025 championship squad to sign with an MLB organization.
Colyer made his professional debut last season and was a core member of the Oakland Bullpen. He had the third-most relief appearances on the team (36) and the second-best bullpen ERA on the team (3.77) while striking out 55 and only walking 18 in 43.0 innings.
The Hayward, CA native played most of his amateur ball locally, attending James Logan High School in Union City before his college career took him to Ohlone College (2019-21), Shorter University (2022), and Cal State East Bay (2023). As a senior with the Pioneers in 2023, he received honors as an NCBWA All-West Region Team and All-CCAA Second Team.
"I want to thank all of my friends, family, teammates, coaches, and all the Oakland fans for an unforgettable season. I'm excited to now join the Washington Nationals. I'll always have the memories of playing for my hometown team and I am beyond grateful to be part of a team that brought a championship back to Oakland."
- James Colyer
"I am so proud of James and what he has been able to accomplish in this last year. I know how hard he's worked to prove his ability at the professional level and this is well deserved. I look forward to following what's next for him in Washington's system."
- Don Wakamatsu, EVP of Baseball Operations
"The one thing that was missing from a 2025 season that had everything was seeing one of our guys move on to an affiliate club. I've said before that it feels like Christmas day anytime a player gets a contract like this, so I couldn't be happier for James today."
- Tyler Petersen, Assistant GM, Baseball Operations
In just two seasons, Colyer becomes the fifth Ballers player to move to an affiliate system, preceded by pitchers Danny Kirwin (BOS), Tyler Davis (CWS), Elijah Pleasants (SF), and Carson Lambert (TOR).
Oakland's 2025 championship defense begins on May 19, 2026 with Opening Night against the Missoula Paddleheads. For tickets and more information visit www.oaklandballers.com.
