LONG BEACH, CA – The Oakland Ballers (0-7, 22-33) were shut out for the first time this season as the Long Beach Coast (7-0, 44-11) defeated Oakland 7-0 in the series opener from Blair Field.
Starting right-hander Hunter Day (L, 0-3) gave up one run through his first three innings of work but Cuba Bess took him deep in the fourth with a three-run homer to push the Coast lead to four.
A two-out single and an RBI triple from Emilio Corona in the fifth knocked Day out of the game. He finished the night going 4.2 innings, allowing six runs on eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
Long Beach starting right-hander Jack Martin (W, 6-0) tossed five scoreless innings and allowed just three hits and one walk with four strikeouts to earn the win.
New right-handed reliever Christian Diaz made his Ballers debut after he signed with the team earlier in the afternoon. He struck out four in 1.2 innings pitched, allowing one unearned run on one walk and one hit. Diaz previously pitched for the Ogden Raptors earlier this season.
Jake Dixon and Ryan Faulks combined for four scoreless innings of relief and five strikeouts to seal Long Beach's ninth consecutive win over the Ballers.
With a first inning single, Jeter Ybarra extended his team-best hit streak to 21 games. He's now batting .425 over this span.
Oakland is now batting .212 (14-for-66) with runners in scoring position to start the second half after going 0-for-7 on Tuesday.
